Mental health issues are another pandemic we have all been ignoring for far too long. We do not offer enough support for people seeking help (or a safe space to talk stuff out) or help for people beyond the ability to seek their own help. The people beyond seeking their own help fall through so many cracks in the system until they are even more beyond reach.

The athletes speaking up and prioritizing their mental health are so brave. I cannot imagine what head space all those other gymnasts are in who dealt with all the abuse and seeing how the system was rigged against them at every turn. Or the female athletes who have every second of their lives and outfits and performance scrutinized while the men get to just have a "bad day" and not have a million articles written about it.

And at least those people are getting a chance to speak out, or bring attention to issues. Meanwhile millions of people suffer in silence from all sorts of mental health issues, mild and intense, including so many vets who end up on the streets or with severe PTSD.

I assume my own experiences with people with mental heath issues are not common, but being in a big city with lax prosecution and limited resources means I see people having mental health breaks so often.

This was literally my afternoon and the first two things I see at least once a week.

Today while waiting for the bus home a man was having a mental health freak out, the police approached him and told him to move along. Moving along meant he got on my bus and yelled nonsense for the 30 minutes I was on there.

I got to my bus stop where I had to walk into the street to avoid the huge pile of stuff on the sidewalk and tree lawn put there by the mentally ill man who lives at that bus stop.

I got past him and to my house, where I changed out of my clothes and headed to my friends house so I could formally serve his upstairs mentally ill neighbor a "no contact" order the courts finally approved.

She previously hit my friend and broke his window. She spends hours yelling and slamming stuff upstairs and comes and yells in his windows. Sunday I had to call the police because it sounded like her and a man were having a domestic abuse fight. The police came and had to distract her while the man packed and snuck off to a hotel and then train home the next day.

I called the mental health triage line Monday where I was informed she did not meet the requirement to receive assistance from their team.

At some point all of these people were still reachable and if we had enough resources they could have gotten the help they needed before it got this far. Instead they live on the ragged edge and end up homeless where it only makes their mental health worse and it harder for people to find and help them.

Its such a vicious cycle.

Mental health issues are something our society feels comfortable sweeping under the rug. It makes no sense. Biles is so brave coming forward. The olympics in particular have a culture of pushing yourself to your limits, and beyond. That’s what can lead some people to get ill.
