Grace Kelly is no longer available to play Evelyn so if some people wants to fancast her as Evelyn why can’t you let them be? There’s no need to rain on anyone’s parade. She’s not a threat to your fave getting the role.
Also, if you look at the castings of popular books turned to movies or series, none of the fan favorites get the roles. I’m 99% sure that the actresses who will eventually play Evelyn and Celia have never been mentioned in this thread.
This x10000000
Most popular film adaptation casted no name actors (robert pattinson for twilight , jennifer lawrence for The hunger game, they were nobody before these films). Initially, people were outrage fot these castings because they didn't match character image in their head but they ended up loving these actors anyway.
Casting director will do what they want, none of us here has any power regarding that matter.
Let's people have fun, it's that serious anyway. People here can dream cast who they want.
We have no news regarding the adaptation anyway, for all we know it may take years.
While reading the book I tend to picture Evelyn as a mix between Rita Hayworth (changing herself in order to look more american, I could bet that the author took this actress as inspo) and Marilyn Monroe (sex symbol). And now that I did some research, perhaps also a bit of the fierceness of Lauren Bacall or Sophia Loren.
And for Celia I'm not really sure... I imagine a certain type of "innocence" on her at the beginning. They often describe her beauty as girl next-door, with round eyes and all. She was also incredibly talented and the best example for all of that would be Audrey Hepburn.
The author clearly took inspo from the top celebrities of those times so we probably got it right with at least one of all the actresses that we have named in the thread. I can also see it happening with the other actresses that some of you have mentioned.
So I started reading it the other day and I left it up to chap 44 (so around the 440 page) and it ended with
“It was one of the last times we were all together laughing, smiling, happy. A family.
Because after that, I ruined it.”
and I just couldn’t keep reading anymore. Now I’m trying to gather courage to get through this stuff and see which awful way Evelyn screwed things up. She’s on her fifth husband, so there are 2 more to go and the last one is Celia's brother. On top of that, on one chapter it ended with Monique saying that when she finally finishes Evelyn’s story, she will find out what all this was about and she will hate Evelyn so much, that she will be truly afraid that she might kill her. So not only Evelyn fucks up her family and her relationship with Celia to the point of no repair but she also does something so deeply terrible that Monique will come from admiring her and acting more like her, to wishing her dead.
I finally sort of get what some of you have been saying so much. It’s hard to believe Celia was Evelyn’s love when she’s (allegedly) suffering while thinking of her but her sorrows get quickly brushed off when a hot guy walks into the room. There are so many things going on here and there that it feels more like the whole Celia deal is an after thought rather than a genuine wound that Evelyn was carrying by having “the one” get away. Also what’s up with Celia’s characterization? there isn’t much going on, at first she was the unbelievable talented, girl-next-door beauty type of actress, someone wise and witty yet showing the cards under her sleeve only when she wanted (there was so much to explore there, she could have been quite complex and compelling) then they show her with a more matured type of beauty yet immature mindset, someone deeply jealous and emotional.
Having said all of that, it’s hard not to think about the book, there’s an obvious appeal just because of how interesting and glamorous it all is. I mean the golden age of Hollywood is something quite fascinating. They are both supposedly attractive women and, personally, all of it can’t help but make me think and wonder about perhaps how many actresses of those times genuinely had something akin to this going on for them and we are none the wiser.
In conclusion, it all feels a bit bittersweet. Like on one hand I enjoy it (the context: Hollywood’s golden age, the ins and outs of it, gorgeous women, etc.) and on the other hand, I hate it (Evelyn’s nonchalance, the poor sex scenes between them, how it always focus way more on Evelyn’s rs with men rather than with Celia, how Celia is more of an afterthought and ultimately, they portray Celia as a jealous lesbian that has a men complex).
I can see why some of us are caught up by it and is getting such a big ruckus in the lesbian community and yet it also bothers me that the author probably think that they nailed it with the wlw aspect of their book when they definitely didn’t.

God yeah you've captured the emotional rollercoaster that is this book. I can never reread or relisten to this book again. I don't even know if I can watch the adaptation though I'm sure they'll fix a lot of the issues by making their relationship more romantic.
Whether you feel like finishing the book or not I think you're already so invested that if you don't finish you'll wonder what the ending is forever.

Whether you feel like finishing the book or not I think you're already so invested that if you don't finish you'll wonder what the ending is forever.
You were right, I did indeed finish it and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised.
I was genuinely expecting the very worst from Evelyn. I thought she would fuck Don or Max and cheat on her but thankfully it was nowhere near as bad, it was just Evelyn taking another daring decision on her acting career before consulting it with Celia, putting herself first once more, but then she showed that she was deeply regretful of that decision (not talking it with Celia first and being that action, or lack of it rather say, the one that destroyed their relationship). Ultimately, it was just the drop that overflowed the glass and it makes perfect sense that it was that way. If you push and push at one point it's going to snap, so Celia finally having enough because of this (even though it wasn't THAT awful) is understandable. Also Evelyn's deep understanding and self reflection of it all was pretty good. She comprehended that the choices that she made here and there were constant little cuts done to Celia, to the point that those little cuts became a big wound that just wouldn't heal. And on the other hand, Celia also realized of her immature behavior and how she told Evelyn the very words that hurt her the most.
I also expected far worse with Monique but it wasn't THAT bad either. I initially thought that Evelyn was going to screw her over with the biography or something but it wasn't that so it's "ok". And I also expected that the marriage to Celia's brother would happen out of spite but thankfully it wasn't that either.
It may be because my expectations were so low but I was sort of ok with it all. By the end of it, I was overall happy with it. Celia and Evelyn ended up together, living a relaxed life with nothing more to prove. There were many many things I think could have been done differently and more delicately and it wouldn't have been that much work since it was just mentioning Celia a bit more often to make the "she was my one true love" and "she was the only honest, truest part of me" more believable but by the end of the book, with Evelyn ready to drop it all for Celia and realizing what truly mattered, it sort of made up for it. Also, the talk that they had about how they wished things would have been different but at the same time that was who they were (their careers came first. They were, after all, the actresses of those times) it also made sense. I liked it all in all. Not the best (I'm a bit bitter about not getting better and more developed scenes between Evelyn and Celia + how quickly the disregarded their rs when a man came into the picture) but not the worst either.
What was your take on it anon? Did you like it? or hated it? or was it in between?
Perhaps the author knew we would be left in a gray area with our feelings just like Monique...
A lot of people want Ana De Armas as Evelyn but she's already doing a Marilyn Monroe biopic so this would probably feel reductive. I personally would like to see someone like Eiza Gonzalez. Evelyn is a white or white-passing latina and I think Eiza fits the bill.
Eiza definitely fits the bill. Her life and Hollywood career are also quite similar to Evelyn. Changed herself in order to be more appealing for the Hollywood masses. She has those brown eyes and the type of beauty that would have you looking twice. Although just as Ana de Armas, she seems to be doing a biopic of María Felix so it could also be a bit repetitive... but she would certainly kill it as Evelyn Hugo.
Besides as another anon said, productions rarely cast the fans favorite so we will most likely get two unknown actresses for the movie. I just hope that the one that does Evelyn is indeed latin or has latin heritage otherwise a vital part of the character that makes her who she is, would be disregarded.
Am I the only one that was left hungry for more wlw stories with Hollywood's golden era as their context?? Another wlw with famous figures, preferably 2 famous actresses of those times? a bit of a remake of this story but better lol
Like I bet there could be some properly written and compelling stories made from that. I mean, there's so much material to explore.
It also leaves me thinking on actresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford and the list goes on and on. There's also rumors of some same sex one night stands from Elizabeth Taylor (allegedly with Marilyn Monroe), Brigitte Bardot, etc. It wouldn't be so far fetched to think that more known actresses also fooled around here and there.

there was supposed to be a movie coming out about dietrich and garbo and their lovers to enemies story but idk what came of it
I don’t know what to think, honestly? I felt so many different types of emotions reading this book, and most of them not the good kind.
I felt bad for Celia. Yes, she could go too far sometimes with wanting to be ‘out’ - as it was unrealistic during that time. I felt bad in the sense the book never really took her feelings into account. What she had to really endure with being with someone like Evelyn and how much it really hurt. It was more than staying in the closet.
The way the writer portrayed Evelyn and Harry’s relationship as more real made me sick to my stomach.
And how she had to keep reminding us time and time again that she loved most of her seven husbands. Like okay, we know???
Celia just felt like an afterthought a lot of the time. The writer just told us how epic their love story was, they didn’t show it.
But I will also say there was so good parts I enjoyed, it wasn’t all bad as I’m making it out to be. I think the mini series they’re making will actually turn out better than the book.

It was written by a straight woman which answers most of your complaints. I think the book is okay but seriously flawed as a lesbian romance.
Evelyns love for Don and later harry came across more real then her love for Celia. Taylor Jenkins Reid is the kind of straight woman who go around calling herself bi but is too straight to even a right f/f romance belivably. That book is not good and any enjoyment ppl get out of it is incidental
This tweet created a mess, look at the qrts seriously do we think this could mean she's going to play Celia?
Welp, honestly this could be a hint and Brittany responded : "my full face was in that last one & you know I thought of you"
My dream cast was Jessica Chastain but I guess she's too famous.
And with that pic of Brittany I can totally see Celia so I wouldn't be that mad personally.

x2 kinda thought it would be Jessica Chastain or Bridget Regan atleast *sigh*
The fact that she's back to being a redhead is already sus but with that comment and response, it's now pretty obvious.
Jessica you'll forever be my Celia

Jessica will forever be my Celia its irksome she isn’t cast on this weren’t they able to contact her for this role? sad seems like she is totally down for it

No it's still there, the picture is the last picture on her most recent instagram post.
Did Jessica say something about the book that I don't know of? Either way I think she's the prefect Celia too but this isn't going to be a blockbuster movie so I don't think they can afford her she's way too famous. Same as Ana de Armas won't play Evelyn. Even if this book truly deserves a top notch cast and adaptation...
I'm so mad omg, and yes someone had to say it, I'm sorry but she doesn't has at all the elegance that Celia has, it's just a no. And the acting????? Celia won 3 damn oscars I expect a better actress.

I thought its adapted to a tv series? from such casting alone I wont expect much from this adaptation it will probably look too hallmarky and D-list. Jessica hasn’t said anything but many suggested it as a book rec on her IG post last year so I think she is 100% aware of it. Anyway, Jessica is perfect for this role she is thee Celia St. James sorry Brittany

TJR said they changed the format and many are thinking it's going to be a movie now... which ugh, a limited series is way better.

x2 this is a claustrophobic nightmare someone wake me up pls
she is as mid as it gets and that's tells everything about the level of production. her acting is just ok too. also a casting an actress mostly known for the biggest queerbait after rizzoli and isle, is a choice. cannot wait to truly breakout my popcorn at evelyn casting.
they fucking ruined celia with that casting i'm so mad but i guess that's on me for having high expectations
thats why I don’t trust hollywood movie adaptations because often or not they can’t get their castings right yeah the casting for daisy jones and the six is pretty decent but I didn’t know we will get a walmart version of seven husbands of evelyn hugo I am so disappointed
Y'all are sure about this? I feel like there is no way they are at the casting stage, they haven't announced anything about it yet. But yeah those comment are sus af and Brittany being a redhead too...
Maybe the role was offered to her already, if so WTFFFFFFFF.

And I doubt they are close to starting filming. I really hope we get some info soon on where it's moving and what the format will be. I swear if it's not a mini series. There's no way they can possibly make it a two hour movie and do it justice imo.
I don't have any issues with Brittany (I've liked her since American Dreams days), but a big no to her as Celia. Just no. She doesn't fit. At all.
