So the Biden impeachment hearings are really going well huh 😂

The remaining sane Republicans can't shut this whole thing down quickly enough. What a glorious clusterfuck of self-ownage it has been.

To be honest, I’m not sure you can. Most people who vote have more than likely already made up their mind, no matter who they plan to vote for. I vote and I’ve already decided. No matter what you try to say or do, you won’t convince me to vote differently. (I plan to vote for Biden).

The only things that might affect the outcome is the ability or desire to vote.

I’ve voted in almost all elections for the past forty-four years.

There are many who don’t make the effort. I guess for them, you may make a difference. Even if people aren’t overly enthused for a candidate, it would be nice if they looked at the big picture and realized that their vote does matter in the big scheme of things. Don’t pout, VOTE!

This from a person in a majority Repube district, but mostly Dem state (which is going to go Repube with the way the state Dem party is running things)

That’s my big gripe. The Dems here put up overly far left candidates and don’t support the ones who aren’t far left. Even though I don’t agree with the candidates on some things, I still vote for them. But my district is going to be represented by a very Dumpster right winger. We had a chance, but the Dem party put up two very left wing people.
You are right on the money with this.
When you look at all the polling in context it is clear the majority understand that 45 is a disaster waiting to happen, but it is also clear that the minority of people who are dumb enough to buy what he is selling are also more engaged and likely to go out and vote for him.
Joe on the other hand does not inspire that cult-like enthusiasm. The nuts and bolts of what he has achieved under the circumstances are actually impressive but are also the type of mundane things that are easy to take for granted.

So there is this effect of "oh I'm not super keen about voting for either candidate" even though what that actually consists of is one guy being too boring to get excited about because he just gets on with his job with no fanfare, while the other has been selling out the country for his own personal gain for the last 7 years and is openly planning to take it even further if he gets another chance, doing deep and long term damage to the country and society.

Easily the most valuable thing you can do is engage people to cast their votes.

Trump is an imbecile and a dangerous pig, it is distressing, you the USA are supposed to be the world leader, the largest and oldest democracy and you want to give the power back to this dangerous madman .... Distressing :eyeroll:
Beaware how the Electoral College works in electing the President. Recall that Trump lost the popular vote to Clinton in the 2016 election. That can happen again. Each state gets a total vote (remember it's a republic here in US) the number of Congressional representative plus 2 for each Senator. This results in a state like Wyoming having each vote be worth 7x more that a vote here in California. There are only a few states which will make a difference and determine the outcome of the election: Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada are the main ones. It's a winner take all in each state (though there is a movement to give electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote, but needless to say, swing states aren't going for it).
If Trump wins again, we can all say goodbye to the world's oldest democracy. Don't know why many sane Republicans con't get this.

Trump can’t secure $454 million appeal bond in New York fraud case, his lawyers say

• Former President Donald Trump has been unable to fully secure a $454 million appeal bond in a New York civil business fraud case, according to a Manhattan Supreme Court filing.
• Trump, the Trump Organization, and other defendants were found liable in the case, filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Donald Trump does not have enough cash to obtain an appeal bond that would prevent New York’s attorney general from seizing his real estate assets to satisfy a $454 million civil fraud judgment, his lawyers indicated in a court filing Monday.
Trump’s lawyers in the filing said it has proved “impossible” for the former president to get a bond that would secure the full judgment he faces while he appeals the verdict ordering him to pay it.
The filing asks a panel of five Manhattan appeals court judges to let Trump avoid having to post a bond while he challenges a judge’s verdict that he, the Trump Organization and other defendants committed business fraud.
If the panel does not approve that request, Attorney General Letitia James could begin a process to seize Trump’s properties on March 25.
James, who had successfully sued Trump in the case, previously said she would take that step if he did not post an appeal bond or pay off the judgment.
The filing in Manhattan Supreme Court’s appellate division says Trump’s team contacted about 30 surety companies but did not find one willing to underwrite the bond.

As voter for over forty years, it is discouraging how our politics has devolved.

The right wing “news” channels use their fine tuned propaganda machines to constantly talk about how Dumpster can fix our country.

The left wing “news” channels mostly talk about how Dumpster is dangerous.

The one constant? They ALL talk about him almost exclusively. For years. Just him. News on those channels isn’t news. It’s pundits talking about him. Over and over.
The media is trash. It has never been worse. It has devolved into almost pure attention-seeking these days on top of the bias it was already plagued with as a result of who owns which part of it.
The sad state of the media deserves a big part of the blame for so many people's wacko uninformed/baseless/alternate-reality-based opinions.

It's hard to see how things can turn around from here to the point where there are unbiased sources of news that most people will trust.

AI is only going to make things worse.
People will already believe ludicrous crap even when a source is obviously fake. Next we're going to have the issue of better tech making fake things that are a lot less easy to identify.

“The wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine”
Former President Donald Trump must pay nearly $355m (£281m) to New York state for lying about the values of his properties, a judge has ruled.
Judge Arthur Engoron also banned him from serving as a company director or taking out loans from banks in the state for three years.

The New York real estate mogul escaped having some of his companies dissolved, which could have meant bankruptcy.
Speaking from his Florida estate, Mr Trump said he would appeal the ruling.

In the ruling on Friday, Judge Engoron referred to previous allegations of wrongdoing in justifying the large amounts he ordered the defendants to pay, writing that they "are likely to continue their fraudulent ways" unless he imposed a "significant" penalty.
He made specific reference to the Trump Organization's conviction in a criminal tax fraud case in 2022, where a jury found it had enriched its top executives with off-the books benefits for more than a decade.
"Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological," Judge Engoron wrote in an at times scathing 92-page decision.
Later he said: "The frauds found here leap off the page and shock the conscience."
Still, Mr Trump's empire was spared from one of the worst potential outcomes - the cancellation of its business licenses, known as the corporate death penalty.

Along with what Mr Trump has been ordered to pay, his two adult sons and co-defendants, Donald Jr and Eric, must each pay $4m. They are barred for two years from doing business in New York, while another co-defendant, Allen Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, has been ordered to pay $1m.
Additionally, Mr Trump, his company, and its affiliates cannot apply for loans in New York for three years.

Turns out that the "Art of the Deal" just consists of cheating, lying, and breaking rules & laws remorselessly.

So sad that what goes around is finally starting to come back around. So very, very sad :nails:
Hell yeah! I've been waiting for this verdict. The late night talk shows are really having a field day, especially with the series of defeats in courts lately. I can't wait what Colbert says about this.

Now that she is in the hands of the Police there is a good chance that she will get out. I have good hopes. In the United States we can use a public record request' (it's in the law I believe for transparency), moreover it has already been used by the journalists who brought out the case to have access to the video but refused by the police, because an investigation is underway, but anyone (either at the end of the investigation or at the end of a trial) can use the public record request. And video is not part of refusal as a document, if it does not affect the security of the country. :)

In this regard, the initial source indicates ca.
In response to a specific public record request for that video, the Sarasota Police Department on Thursday asserted the video was exempt from disclosure due to the ongoing criminal investigation.

Not living in the United States, I don't really understand. Can we make a public request to see the video? (refused by the police for investigation) But potentially, someone can request the video, and then release it, if the police accept at the end of the investigation?

Definitely the right place. That article is especially pertinent to this thread.

The general hypocrisy of it is one of the defining characteristics of the GOP. Full of gay self-loathing, full of female self-loathing (or in the case of the males, just good old fashioned female loathing), economic privilege self-loathing, corruption self-loathing, immigrant self-loathing.

Why do all news outlets say "freeze" when describing what happened to the turtle man? Aren't there actual medical terms for these type of things?
My understanding is that the tv doctors can’t say exactly what happened (the medical reason it happened) without examining him since there could be various reasons. So the best non-medical term to describe that what we saw was freeze. I don’t care for his politics but it was sad. I don’t know if this is because I worked in a hospital for years but the term I used was “episode”.

Florida reviewers of AP African American Studies sought ‘opposing viewpoints’ of slavery
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/ ... 82149.html
For example, a lesson in the Advanced Placement course focused on how Europeans benefited from trading enslaved people and the materials enslaved laborers produced. The state objected to the content, saying the instructional approach “may lead to a viewpoint of an ‘oppressor vs. oppressed’ based solely on race or ethnicity.”

In another lesson about the beginnings of slavery, the course delved into how tens of thousands of enslaved Africans had been “removed from the continent to work on Portuguese-colonized Atlantic islands and in Europe” and how those “plantations became a model for slave-based economy in the Americans.”

Biden administration forgives $39 billion in student debt for more than 800,000 borrowers
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/14/biden-f ... owers.html
  • The Biden administration announced it would automatically cancel education debt for 804,000 borrowers, for a total of $39 billion in relief.
  • The debt cancellation is a result of the administration’s fixes to repayment plans, which included updated counts of borrowers’ payments.
The relief is a result of fixes to the student loan system’s income-driven repayment plans. Under those repayment plans, borrowers get any remaining debt canceled by the government after they have made payments for 20 years or 25 years, depending on when they borrowed, and their loan and plan type.

In the past, payments that should have moved a borrower closer to being debt-free were not accounted for, according to the Biden administration.

“For far too long, borrowers fell through the cracks of a broken system that failed to keep accurate track of their progress towards forgiveness,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

To bring people over the line for forgiveness, the Biden administration counted payments for borrowers who’d paused their payments in certain deferments and forbearances and those who’d made partial or late payments.

Although the forgiveness is a huge victory for borrowers, it is relief to which they were entitled, said Persis Yu, deputy executive director at the Student Borrower Protection Center.

″[M]ake no mistake — over 804,000 people are receiving relief with this action because of 804,000 failures — and this is only the tip of the iceberg,” Yu said in a statement. “Working people have been made collateral damage by a dysfunctional student loan system.”

The announcement comes weeks after the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s sweeping student loan forgiveness plan, which would have delivered relief to about 37 million people.
Good. I'm from country where most university education is free. I received it for free and was able to work in US with zero debt while most of my colleagues have to pay student loans from their paychecks.
It's ridiculous.

It should be illegal for political parties to receive money from donors. Isn't' it corruption?
Well, if all donations were illegal then only rich people would be able to afford to run for office.

Harlan Crow's jaunts on his yacht with Justice Clarence Thomas were a 'textbook billionaire tax scam,' Sen. Ron Wyden tells ProPublica
https://www.businessinsider.com/harlan- ... 023-7?op=1
  • Justice Clarence Thomas and GOP megadonor Harlan Crow's yacht trips have come under scrutiny again.
  • Per ProPublica, Crow registered his yacht as a charter vessel but only took close friends on trips.
  • As a result, he could pay his own company, report losses, and save on his tax bill, per ProPublica.
In April, Crow and Thomas first faced scrutiny related to the 20 years worth of undisclosed trips Crow is accused of gifting to Thomas, per ProPublica. The outlet later reported that Crow purchased Thomas' mother's house and allowed her to live there without paying rent.

In response, Thomas — who asked for an extension to file his financial disclosure forms this year — said that at the time he wasn't aware that he was meant to disclose the trips with Crow.

Crow claimed to the Dallas Morning News that the revelations about his relationship with Thomas were a "political hit job."

Congress has probed Crow's and Thomas's relationship, asking for a detailed disclosure of the gifts that Crow has bestowed to Supreme Court justices.

As it stands, a group of judges, the Committee on Financial Disclosure, is investigating Thomas and disclosure rules, while Senate Democrats have mounted a separate attempt to investigate Thomas and other justices.
