Season 2 scripts are out.
I don’t know if I have the stomach to read these all the way through, but I’ve been checking out specific scenes from the show to see what Sally’s intentions were, to see if what I saw on tv was what she was trying to say. So far my impression is that the scripts are way worse that the show seemed, because Suranne played things differently (intentionally or not) or because they directions were so convoluted that it was impossible to portray what the script said. But even moments that seemed like they were pro Anne and Ann… kinda of weren’t, in Sally’s mind.
Her OBVIOUS narrative, even more obvious in the scripts, is that Anne married Ann out of convenience. Basically because Ann was there and loved her, and Anne really wanted a wife. She is FOND of Ann and truly committed to making it work and doing right by her, but she’s not in love with Ann, at all. Because that’s the story that Sally’s telling, it seeps through everything, including scenes that looked like they were pro Annes moments.
For example: remember when the Annes saw each other for the first time in York and they’re both thirsty as hell? Well, Ann is super in love… while Anne is really happy that her wife will be home soon.
Remember that moment where Anne eats a plum and seems so in love with Ann? Think again, she’s just really happy because she finally has a wife who loves her, a wife that she can take care of (wut?).
Remember in episode 2 when Ann keeps Anne’s watch and Anne decides to leave her diary for the next day to get into bed with Ann, and it’s all cute? Well, it’s that they were talking about Mariana and thinking about Mariana always makes Anne horny.
It’s like Sally can’t help herself. Those are the ones that I’ve seen so far, but I’m sure that there’s more stuff like that. Then you have this jewel from episode 4, an episode that, besides being an Anne/Mariana fest, is very, very in your face about the “victim Mariana” narrative. Sally doesn’t even dwell too much, in the end, on how manipulative Mariana was.
Not only does it say, without a doubt, that Ann is a compromise for Anne, it clearly says that whenever Anne says otherwise she’s really lying to herself, in order to cope.
Then, after the cheating, everything that Anne does is driven by guilt, absolutely everything, including sleeping with Ann. Bizarrely, in what feels like some weird form of fanservice or like someone took her laptop away and wrote it in while she wasn’t looking, Sally throws this in after Anne gets home from Lawton
Like what in the actual fuck? The part about Anne being honest with the "I love you", and all of that bullshit, doesn’t fit with anything that I’ve read so far (or saw on screen), not with anything that came next. I mean, this is the glorious ending to the season. It couldn’t be more meh because Sally clearly doesn’t think that they loved each other (or rather, that Anne loved Ann or that they were ever really happy). I doubt she even thought that they were remotely interesting. She keeps them together because in real life they were, so she has no choice.
Now, let us remember that Gentleman Jack did very well and the excitement around it was, unequivocally, because of Anne and Ann. So while people were crazy about Anne and Ann, there was a plaque put in their honor in that church, Sally gave interviews to fans, fans flooded Suranne and Sophies instagrams with love, everyone was excited about the Annes… this is the story that she was writing, while all of this was happening around her. While she was in a room full of Ann(e)s fans hyping them up for the new season, she knew this was what she wrote.
Is there a requirement somewhere that in order to be a showrunner you have to be a psychopathic scumbag? I feel like I haven’t seen a single one who isn’t. If their true colors haven’t come out yet, give them time and they will.
I’m glad that the show was canceled and the smile was wiped off her face. She seemed so shocked and appalled when the cancellation happened! GOOD! KARMA!
