Completely forgot about this dead thread. I've changed a lot the past few months and was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience to mine: I cannot believe I ever shipped JoJo and Jenna together. Jenna is one fineass WOMAN, adult, mature, grown up and JoJo is quite literally a child. She's very emotionally immature and quite frankly, doesn't know how to act in relationships. She needs to learn that the only way you can ensure that people you date aren't using you is to not spoil them rotten starting the day you meet them. But I get it, she's desperate to impress them. Anyway. She's also extremely naive.
Cannot believe I hoped for the "5 year plan" as if that would happen. Guys, we were so delusional. I sincerely hope no more JenJos exist because this shit is weird. Always has been. Jenna and JoJo are miles apart in life experience, relationships, emotional intelligence, wisdom, etc. It would've always been weird. Can't believe I used to hate Val too because I thought he got in the way of JoJo and Jenna
I wish the best for those two
Honestly, I've always liked older women and I'm young so I still do. I guess I was living vicariously through JoJo which is probably the only reason why I shipped them. Glad I can recognize that now. JoJo definitely had/has feelings for Jenna which I 1000000% understand, we all would in her situation. They had an amazing bond and did something no two human beings had ever done before, ever. That's a unique experience for only them and no one could ever understand what that must have felt like. But there's no way Jenna returned those feelings. I'm sure we get that unrequited love older woman crush thing too.
There are some things here I agree with, some I do not. Is there a significant gap in life experience and maturity between Jenna and JoJo? Yes and no. In some ways, particularly in social and romantic relationships, there is a huge gap as JoJo has lived a very sheltered life. Jenna was able to become the big sister/agony aunt/best friend at a tumultuous time in JoJo's life and I think that was very good for her. However, you can't forget that JoJo has effectively been a working adult in the entertainment industry since she was a tween, you get a certain kind of maturity from that experience. Jenna has said she learned a lot from JoJo in terms of her work ethic and personal drive, maintaining a following and self management etc. In some ways, Jenna was a much more immature 19 year old than JoJo.
Like you, I wish the best for Jenna and Val and their new baby. It's clear there is a lot of love there and I think that's why she was able to nurture JoJo so well. I also think JoJo, in her distress, redirected all of her emotion and love onto Jenna and developed a crush, which isn't unheard of between celebrities and their dance partners, nor between baby gays and unattainable older women as you pointed out.
I think, if you were trying to live vicariously through JoJo in her closeness to Jenna, and now that JoJo is exhibiting traits or behavior you don't align with, you no longer feel that desire to see yourself reflected in her actions. Which is fine. I don't think it's fair to label her a child or "extremely naive". If her current girlfriend isn't to your taste, that is also fine. It doesn't make JoJo
less. Lacking the life experience of a 28 year old does not make her less emotionally intelligent.
Finally, the shipping; for me personally this was always only an extension of the 'characters' they portrayed on screen. I don't know them personally and I respect that they have their own lives, it was just something fun we indulged in to imagine storylines out of the content these characters produced together. At some point it stopped being fun; they stopped interacting, there was no fantasy to indulge as their imagined characters disappeared and their real life personas returned. I don't resent anyone for doing it, but I know it is not for me anymore.
