Most of the times I feel broke even though I have lots of money tucked away. I also have a stable job.

Someday I am not only going to be rich but I shall be wealthy. I believe 😎

Maybe you just hang out around broke people. All my lesbian and bi (who actually date women) friends come from well off families and the ones who don't are studying law, medicine, or engineering. I've had the opposite experience. I'm the brokest one I know :nervous:

Broke liberal arts les here and yep, that's been my experience too. My straight friends mostly rely on their boyfriend/husband's income but my lesbian friends in good jobs are earning the most. Also, as an aside, I wish the adult in my life had been firmer with me about pursuing a career that would lead to financial stability instead of being all "follow your dreeeeeams" because being broke in your 30s is no fun.
My mother encouraged me to pursue a degree in liberal arts or music. But from growing up very poor and seeing her struggle, I rejected that and studied computer science. By the way, you don't necessarily need to go back for another degree if you want to change careers. I've met several people in IT and accounting, that got jobs via certificates or self-study.

My plan for my (baby) niece and nephew is not to discourage them from pursuing their dreams when they're older, because that will just lead to resistance. But like you say, I think it's my responsibility to give them some truthful info. If they're into art, I'm going to see if I can get them to consider some kind of web design/graphics option. If they're into writing, I'm going to see if they'd tolerate being a technical writer. You want to be a social worker or work in non-profit? How about using that urge to care for others as a nurse. Etc..

All else fails, I'll crunch the numbers for them and show them how soon they could do the stuff they love after becoming financially independent through a more realistic job, and what their odds are of getting that dream job.

Marieka Klawitter, professor of public policy at the University of Washington, examined 29 studies across the Western Hemisphere on wages and sexual orientation and found a 9 percent earnings premium for lesbians over heterosexual women.

She controlled for parenthood and concluded lesbians simply had more education and work experience than the general female population.
x

I've found a couple things.
The lesbians I know who went into profitable fields (eg finance, engineering) are in better shape than het women.
The lesbians I know who went into unprofitable field (liberal arts based, service industry) are in worse shape (no man's income to support them).

My experience is that lesbians tend to have better income. Might just be because I went to a really good university and hung around a bunch of posh overachievers who went on to have pretty lucrative careers.

I was done with my first career by 27 and ended up going to grad school to become a professor. The money’s not particularly good but I had set myself up with a house already so it wasn’t a huge deal to get a pay cut.

My wife works in medical care and brings in a pretty decent income. She has her own house too, which she bought before we got married. Between us we don’t worry about much financially.

I don't have a budget. "No more Door Dash/Postmates/Uber Eats; takeout twice a month and boba twice a week," is my budget. Don't have a car. Used to take public transit, but I have an e-bike now, so I'm good. I have a stove, microwave, and rice cooker, but I don't like to cook, hence the ramen. Level of daily physical activity is terrible. I bike about x4 times a week, do some sit ups, and and squats, but I don't have a conventional 9-5 job. I sit on my ass most of the day.
Have you tried eating like that daily? Do you get hungry? I'd be starving and I'm petite with even less physical activity than you lol.

Reminder of other quick meal options: cereal, bagels, oatmeal, toast, sandwiches, tortillas (tacos, wraps), udon noodles (as noodle soup or with a sauce like peanut sauce which is easy to make with peanut butter. add protein or veggies), rotisserie chicken, frozen or microwavable foods/meals (pancakes, dumplings, burritos, burger patties, vegetables, fruit). A vitamin wouldn't hurt. I've had similar habits, some that still remain with me today so I get it. It's better to aim to make improvements to our diets over time.
I try not to eat anything till 1pm every day. Green tea (and, I suspect, depression) are nice appetite suppressants. Also daily, I have a cup a cup of Ripple Milk mixed Piknik creamer and honey. Whenever I juice, I down it with iron, vitamin b1 & b12 supplements. I usually nap a few hours in the afternoon, and this helps pass the time till dinner. Fear of catching covid (getting sick and ending up in a hospital would be absolutely ruinous, financially) could also be playing a part of in my current diet. I used to buy rotisserie chicken and munch on it for a few days, but I really don't like setting foot in grocery stores nowdays.

I'm just doing the best that I can given my circumstances, y'all. I know it's not healthy.
How is your diet going for you anon? lol

who pays a dollar per pack of ramen???!
Woman, back up. Ordering takeout from food delivery apps or grabbing to-go while out and about was probably costing me $200 a month. Black garlic is my favor flavor. I'm saving some money. That's the important part. I've also temporarily cut all of my streaming services till Black Widow debuts on Disney+, which, I think, is in May.

Vitamin supplements are such a scam. 95% of them are not necessary for most people.
If you have a balanced diet then the only possible thing you might need is Vitamin D if you're not able to get enough sunlight.
The rest you are mostly just urinating your money away for no benefit.

X2 lol ikr? To be frugal, I think some of you need to learn basic cooking skills. Cheaper than eating ramen and juicing.
da. well NOTHING is cheaper than ramen, to be fair. It would be good for her to learn to cook some other things, and healthier, but what you are talking about isn't actually cheaper. And the price of chicken has increased dramatically in the last year.
If you buy a big bag of rice, that's way cheaper per serving than ramen. Probably a little better for you nutritionally too. Don't even need chicken. If you want the protein then add lentils or something.
Plus juicing and buying vitamins probably cost a fair bit too and can be easily replaced with whatever was suggested.
True. The thing is OP has the money to buy all sorts of fruits for her juice 😂 bish just don't know how to properly do her monthly shopping.

I make the least in our group as an accountant but I'm still a home owner and live comfortably since I'm the oldest, 33 so I've been saving and making investments for years.

For most of 2021, I'll be having two meals a day: 01) A Larabar; 02) Nissin black garlic oil ramen (w/x1 egg, chopped green onions, and a clove of garlic). First time I've ever bought a 30 pack. Had to order from Amazon, because all of the local asian markets are out of stock of this flavor.

Don't worry. I also juice honeycrisp apples, oranges, blueberries, kale, celery, and carrots a few times a week. Hopefully, this will offset the nutritional awfulness of my ramen dinner, but probably not. :nervous:

If you're not allergic try buying or making some peanut butter (it's really easy to make). It's cheap and protein. My gf basically lived off a diet like yours + peanut butter for a while after college.

I've lived really frugally too but somehow right now I don't remember what other tips I have. If you get tired of the noodles try a big bag of rice from an asian grocer (south asian or east asian), it's cheaper there than at a supermarket and one bag lasts a long time. Don't be ashamed to go to a foodbank too if you really need to.

I have a completely different experience when it comes to money then. Most of lesbians I know are in their 20s or 30s, single and/or without kids, which saves a lot of money even on a mid paying job. So I don’t find lesbians to be broke. But my gay friends on the other hand, dear lord  They’re crazy spenders and don’t know how to save a penny :fool:

That is not sustainable at all... Instead of juicing, you should eat them whole so the fiber can help to keep you a little more satiated.

I agree with the above. Please eat some decent food. In the long run eating a single bar and ramen everyday will cost you more in medical bills. Replace the Larabar with oatmeal. It'll be a lot more filling in the long run. You can buy the quick oats version and all you need to do is buzz it in the microwave and then maybe add some fruit/nuts/honey/cinnamon etc whatever flavor combo you want. It's also a whole lot cheaper. If you want a cheap dinner a lot of frugal people go with rice and beans. You can literally just put rice in the rice cooker. That's barely any cooking. You can add the garlic you were going to put into your ramen into the rice pot with the rice. Put some stock cubes in there too if you want some flavor (it's better for you than the flavor packets in ramen). Then mix in some canned beans. Add a vegetable or two. If you dont like cooking I found an easy way to steam vegetables such as broccoli or carrots. Put them in a bowl with some water at the bottom. Put cling wrap on top and have a little tiny opening and then put it in the microwave. If you want some meat get a rotisserie chicken (very cheap) and then rip some meat and add to your rice/bean mix.

I'm trying to learn to live within my means. :dramaqueen:

For most of 2021, I'll be having two meals a day: 01) A Larabar; 02) Nissin black garlic oil ramen (w/x1 egg, chopped green onions, and a clove of garlic). First time I've ever bought a 30 pack. Had to order from Amazon, because all of the local asian markets are out of stock of this flavor.

Don't worry. I also juice honeycrisp apples, oranges, blueberries, kale, celery, and carrots a few times a week. Hopefully, this will offset the nutritional awfulness of my ramen dinner, but probably not. :nervous:
That is not sustainable at all... Instead of juicing, you should eat them whole so the fiber can help to keep you a little more satiated.

What is your budget? What do you have access to (stove, microwave, rice cooker, car, public transportation, etc)? What is your activity level?
I don't have a budget. "No more Door Dash/Postmates/Uber Eats; takeout twice a month and boba twice a week," is my budget. Don't have a car. Used to take public transit, but I have an e-bike now, so I'm good. I have a stove, microwave, and rice cooker, but I don't like to cook, hence the ramen. Level of daily physical activity is terrible. I bike about x4 times a week, do some sit ups, and and squats, but I don't have a conventional 9-5 job. I sit on my ass most of the day.

I love that ramen. I'm lucky my asian store near me always has it. How much did you have to pay for the box? Also, you probably know this but that can't be good for your health lmfao
Lol. Yeah, likely so.

I paid $30 total. Could probably get a 30 pack of any other flavor for half this cost, but, well, I like this, so I got it.
That's a good price lol. When I buy one, it's like $2.50.

Its been my experience that its not about how much you make but about how you spend it.

I have no debt and a fair amount of savings. I have dated people who make twice what I do and have a fair amount of debt and no savings. I have also met people who make less than me but own their house, something that is a goal of mine that has so fair eluded me.

The anon above here who makes 15k a year is doing great for themselves where they are. However 15K might not even cover a years rent here. Its all relative. If I meet a girl who is living within her means and able to save up money for emergencies and put some aside for things she enjoy like vacations and concerts than I don't really care how much she makes a year.

And based on my diverse group of friends I would say the gays I know and the straights I know are equally poor/rich.

Sorry how is this different from literally any straight person? My dating pool really defined by where I went to school + the industry I work in. There are plenty of working class, middle income, and upper income lesbians. But really it comes down to the same old privilege. I went to an "elite" university, which helped me find work in finance in NYC (never earned below 100K in my life but also it's NYC so COLA), and I am now in tech. I've only dated consultants, financiers, and other people in tech. I'd be super open to dating an artist or a write but we move in completely different social circles and I do think what we find attractive in other people is...very different. Beside the overall dating pool being smaller, I see 0 difference between me and my straight friends, whom also date the same cookie cutter people from the same schools and industries.

It may just be my personal belief, but I have always found that you are more likely to meet a working class lesbian because those that are middle class maybe more likely to stay in the closet for financial and family reasons.

I only make 10k a year but with that money I have traveled to Europe and once a month in my country (precovid)and now I'm starting to pay my mortgage :hmmm: but here lifestyle is more cheap (México) seeing your incomes makes me think that I'm broke :nervous:
Damn, how cheap is living in Mexico? You can live off of 10k?
I gain 15k before taxes then my taxes are 3k and my expanses (electricity service, pantry, internet, water, streaming services, etc) is more or less 1.5k the rest I use it to invest or If I want to buy something for myself.
It depends where you are because I live in México city, have a good job and the zone is like for high middle class .
15k is middle class in Mexico? :blinkwide: That's like minimum wage in America. So if someone could make that much remotely, they could live like a queen in Mexico.
