Loved the film ultimately but didn't understand the ending and wished the director made it clearer. Did they find a way to stay together or did they separate? I hate directors prioritising making arty points over audience satisfaction. I initially found Mary super irritating, her surly monosyllabic manner got very grating very quickly. And I thought she seemed too curvy for a character living in dire poverty, she also just didn't physically match well with extremely skinny Saoirse, who was brilliant in every aspect though I'm not normally a fan. However the 'love' scenes were great, they had excellent chemistry there. Wasn't Mary supposed to have had another previous lover (I didn't fully understand that plot either but it involved a yearning older lady in the village who seemed to want her back but Mary wasn't interested any more?) There was no proof either girl had never had lesbian encounters before so I didn't find the sex OTT. I won't watch Portrait now after reading the comments above, yikes, maybe just the romance parts.

it was a good enough movie for berthas, but with the cast, the setting, the historic character etc i'd be lying if I didn't think they coudl've done a better job. Kind of wasted potential. No wider audience would be captivated to watch the dullness that purposefully permeates the whole movie - except lesbians

one thing that always sticks with me as unrealistic, is how she eats her out the very first time together - a long suffering closeted frigid scared lesbian and a young inexperienced woman who only known bad sex with man ?

I’ve been over the period piece films for awhile didn’t care for Portrait of a Lady on Fire thought it was grossly overhyped. Gave this a shot because I’ve been in love with Kate Winslet since forever.
unpopular opinion : I like this movie better than Portrait
I’ve never seen a bad movie that Kate Winslet starred in. And I know that she will always goto the max. Portrait was dull and I didn’t find the actresses’ performances particularly compelling.

I found both storylines somewhat similar but the evolution of their relationships played out better in Ammonite. I don’t mean happy-ending because god I couldn’t imagine being a lesbian during these miserable time periods.

Pretty sure she’s straight
Uh, pretty sure she's not.

I was always shocked that Kate talked about rescheduling the sex scene so it fell on Saoirse's birthday. But judging by the replies in this thread, even them slapping you across the face with a giant fish doesn't clue you in. :handbags:

Idk why people hate on Ammonite so much while praising Portrait
Dreary historical lesbian film fatigue had firmly settled in by the time Ammonite arrived.

People really hate this movie smh. For me it's fine. Not really great, not really bad either, and i don't find this movie boring. I enjoy every moment between those characters, idk how people can said Ammonite is boring because lack of dialogues, even Portrait also feel very quiet and boring, but somehow people passed on it.
Tbh i still think Portrait is the great one, but the hate that Ammonite got is something weird for me. Maybe try not to compare anything with Portrait and just enjoy the movie.
People comparing Ammonite with Portrait :fool: :fool:
In portrait ending Adele Haenel marries a man who fucks her every night and she pops out kids. Other girl cries and movie ends. NO happy ending.
In Ammonite ending Ronan says IDGAF about men and asks her female lover to move in to her house and make love every night. Then the 2 girls stare at each other in museum and there is an unspoken agreement they will stay together. Love wins.
In every way you look at it quite clear Ammonite is far far superior to Portrait of a lady who marries a man.
This. I watched Ammonite before I did Portrait, and Portrait didn’t appeal to me as much as Ammonite did. Idk why people hate on Ammonite so much while praising Portrait especially given the ending of Portrait.

A question- why did it seem like Mary was mad at Charlotte when that dude did not want to pay full price? Charlotte was complimenting her and the guy did pay the full price.

I've recently been looking at some of promotional interviews for this movie & was wondering, am I the only one who found Kate Winslet & Saoirse Ronan's bizarre posturing/pandering about their sex scenes to be absolutely cringe? Why do straight actresses do this? Do they really feel that lesbians are that desperate for self-affirmation & should somehow feel flattered & less likely to question straight actresses taking queer roles if they put on a big show about how they absolutely "LOVED " performing their lesbian sex scenes? If this was a movie about a straight couple where the 45 year old actor said he scheduled their graphic sex scene as a birthday gift to his 26 year old co star, pretty sure everyone would be rightfully calling him a creepy old perv.
Yea that's because men in general are creepy ,women are not so

Watched it yesterday. I liked it a lot, I did not think the movie was slow, the pace of the movie was consistent. Kate was fab, I enjoyed her roughness and moments of gentleness, she was perfect. Her character was well developed. Saoirse also did a good job, I esp liked the farewell scene when she is in the carriage and looking at Mary, she emotes well with her eyes.
Now for the shallow stuff, I did not mind one bit the appearance of Mary’s hands, she works a grueling job with her hands day in and day out, also a nice contrast with Charlotte’s gentle hands, a girl who hasnt worked a day in her life. The kisses were ok, it was kinda clumsy, maybe that was the point.
Overall, I am glad to have seen the film, my time was not wasted.

Just watched the film.

Would rate it 7 out of 10.

Start was a bit slow. But 2nd half of movie is pretty fab.

Winslet is OK, Ronan is brilliant. Chemistry between 2 could have been better. Ending was average.

Overall i liked it a lot. If Ronan entered film from start and it had a better end it would be a great movie.

Honestly, I think Saorise was the weak link in this movie. She's as sexy as a plotted plant and boy the movie drags. Fiona Shaw showing up as KW's snarky ex was the only decent moment in the movie.

People are raving about Mare of Easttown so much because it’s an amazing show and really caught people’s attention. Mare (KW) is 1000% straight in it, though.
It was very good. Would love to see her in more roles like this.

Finally watched it. The falling out at the end seemed very contrived. Disappointingly so. However I like that Mary didn't give up that easily even though she obv wouldn't have made that mistake - would she? The rest of the film was great esp the only occasional incidental music. Glad I watched it alone with those sex scenes
I've never really been that keen on kw but there's something about her here
Is the age gap for real or Hollywood version?

Actually, they did film a final scene of them frolicking on the beach to show them as living happily ever after, but the director decided to end it in the museum.

You mean HEA, with a big wedding? Then no.
But neither of them dies, and it's left ambiguous.
It's a historical movie, and at those times women got sold off to husbands, and couldn't choose to live with another woman. The most wealthiest could of course, if their families let them.
So relatively speaking it's not a bad ending, but also not a date movie either.
Definition of happy ending when it comes to lesbian movies: neither of them dies

Hmmm some hostility in this forum :-/

So I am joining this thread quite late. I loved the film. KW played her role amazingly. Her loneliness and bitterness was so palpable. I know some ladies didn't like the age gap but I like older women so this wasn't a deal breaker for me. The sex scenes made me blush because of how explicit they were and I wasn't expecting a scene so raw and graphic.

I know a lot of ladies will want to slap me but I think casting Saoirse Ronan was a terrible choice. I didn't know who she was prior to this film but I'm not a fan at all. And people say she's very good looking but I disagree, she's nothing special at all. KW though, omg so attractive, she got better as she aged!!!!

Kate got me :horny: between this role and her in Mare of Easttown.

I find Saoirse Ronan such a nuanced actress but a delight. She is magnetic to watch and her subtle undetones in some of her acting is beautiful and mesmerising, never over the top.
Perhaps I shouldn't comment until I've seen some of her other roles. On a more superficial level, there was chemistry but at the same time there wasn't. I don't think she was sorted for the part. I didn't feel particularly comfortable when she got butt naked and I think that was the nail in the coffin for me lol... but Kate

For the longest time I hated saoirse ronan, I knew her since atonement and ammonite is the movie where I finally became obsessed with her and now I find her really good looking, and I find KW disgusting in this movie ahhhha… but I kinda like her and also watch many of her movies as well…
Haha "disgusting" is such a powerful word  You really thought she looked that bad? Maybe I need glasses because I think she is the prettiest ugly character in this film lol
Yup while I was watching it the first time, I kept thingking how will charlotte fall in love with
Mary when shes like that hahahaha its kind of a turn off really.....I thought what will Mary smell like hahahha with all those armpit hairs HHhahahaha.... On the contrary I really dig what saoirse has to offer hahaha it takes a second watch to appreciate it imo.. her expressions alone turns me on hahahahah!!!
Haha and I was thinking, how will Mary fall in love with that spoiled brat Charlotte. Hahaha ewwwww I know right, like I get we have portray how society was and yes women were hairy... but do we need to see it in film? My eyes were violated. There was just too much hair going on, imagine only being able to bathe with a pot of funky water and a rag 🤢🤮🤮🤮 and speaking of turn on, KW body :hudoin:

Its a boring movie really but saoirse ronan made it bearable to watch, such a stunner now(being skinny suits her well) , hoping to see more of her with these kind of roles… :shifty:

I finally got around to watch it. I understand this might be sacrilege but I really didn't enjoy it. The sound mixing was terrible, especially the scenes at the beach. Also I didn't understand on what basis they fell in love. Loneliness? I really didn't get it. Some weird scenes as well. The one where Kate pees at the beach and then touches the bread before handing it out. Lol I can't. Gross. Got the same feeling as when I watched BITWC. I feelt nauseous watching the latter. This movie wasn't THAT nauseating though lol. Just some very strange choices and BAD sound.
